Crime

Marie had loved him.
Her father had needed a business deal with his father, and she had thought that if she became his friend she might help the situation.
Her original plan was to keep things simple, but she found herself more attracted to him than she had anticipated and things went much too quickly.
He had said things to her that sounded strange, sometimes threatening, but she wanted to think about his kisses, his hands, and the passion instead. Especially his hands.
After she discovered that she was pregnant, she decided that she should not have been surprised. Mother Nature sets all those nerve endings on fire to achieve her purpose.
That Saturday night she had planned to eat supper with him and discuss their future. She had thought he might propose to her. But before she could tell him about the pregnancy, he told her to use her influence to help him gain a deal for his father that would hurt her father. When she refused, he placed his hand on her neck and threatened her.
That night she remembered her father saying that it was important not to let a person threatening you get away with it. He asked her to meet with him by the river the next day. She knew she needed to surprise him if he threatened her again. She took a gun.
He had been nice at first while they walked by the river, then he had tried to coax her to reconsider, placing his hand on her shoulder and then squeezing it near her neck. She had held still, and when he released his painful grip, she had stepped away from him.
"You will never threaten me again."
He laughed and didn't see her take the gun out of her purse, and then he saw it pointed at him.
His face became that of a wild animal and he charged towards her.
She pulled the trigger three times, putting large bullet holes in his chest. He fell, dead. She pushed the body off the cement sidewalk and into the river.
She needed to escape, and soon. A boat was passing by. A young man was working on its deck. On impulse, she ran to a bridge and jumped ten feet down onto some mats as it went under the bridge.
"That was dangerous," the young man said.
"Where are you going?"
"Brazil."
"I will soon be followed by bad trouble. I need to go with you. For the trip I'll be your girl."
He looked at her.
It will be a few hours before we reach the ocean. If by then I'm satisfied with you, then you can stay.
