Try Again

She didn't have enough money for a hotel room. She found a phone and made a collect call to a distant friend of the family.
"Yes, it is me. Yes, I'm alive. Can you send me some money by Occidental Expreso?"
"Well, I think the question should be, how much can you send? And I don't know how many years it will take for me to pay you back."
"It is too soon afterwards. Besides, I need to change my appearance."
"Thank you."

The money arrived ten minutes later. Fifty thousand dollars.
She felt dirty. She took a shower and washed herself with soap and hot water for twenty minutes.

She had studied English for five years and was able to use it to move around town. She found a hospital that specialized in plastic surgery. Yes, they could make her look different, more beautiful. Marie was beautiful. But the receptionist said that the changes would make her even more pretty, and that the changes Marie had in mind were good choices.
She signed five pages that all said if there were any problems, it was her fault, and then went under the anesthesia, and dreamed that Jacque was on top of her, and that he would never finish.
"We would prefer not to show you your face until the swelling goes down," the doctor suggested.
"Is there anything we can get you?"
"I don't think so. I'd probably ask for something like a physics textbook in English that includes calculus."
The doctor laughed. "Actually I have such a textbook in my personal library."

Her face looked like she had fallen off the roof headfirst into a swimming pool full of skin color make-up.
When she washed the make-up off, she saw blue and purple over over the left side of her face where there had been some internal bleeding.
She didn't wear any make-up. She left the hotel and rented a room from an older lady who wanted someone to talk to as she sat on the front porch, watching the birds come to her feeder.
"You've encountered some kind of trouble. What are you looking for?"
"I need a new identity and a passport."
"Hmmp." She snorted. "If you have two thousand dollars, my nephew could probably fix things for you in twenty four hours."
"Can he use a computer to take the bruises out of a passport photo?"
She snorted again. "He's a genius. He should have made something out of himself."
The photos were taken and altered. She enrolled in a two year physical sciences degree at a junior college.
