Roller Skating

"Try putting one foot in front of you at an angle, and pushing against it to start your motion." Phil watched Maria attempt the maneuver.
She tried it and she rolled backwards three feet.
"Now, the next time you try that, before you come to a stop, try pushing with the other foot in the same way to keep you going."
She was half way across the area when another girl came up to Phil.
"It's going to be couples skate for the next song. Will you skate with me?" She looked at Maria. "You don't mind, do you?"
"No, not at all," Maria said, feeling confused.
Phil was having fun skating with the other girl. There were fewer people on the ring, and both of them could skate backwards, to so they skated round the oval, arm and arm side by side, then they took turns skating backwards. Maria watched, and felt resentment, no, really and truly it was something else. Jealousy.
What could she have done? Refuse? She had no claim on Phil.
She watched the other girls movements. Smooth. Fluid. Sexy. The way she put her hands on Phil's body wasn't unusual for two skaters, but it was intimate enough, or so it seemed to Maria, enough to irritate her. She went back to the room to work on skating backwards.
She was traveling in circle, a very slow circle, when she felt his hands on her waist. She almost fell and he pulled her backwards, against his chest.
"Gotcha!" He said. (Gotcha is a contraction of "got you.")
"You are a good skater, Phil."
"I thought we could practice skating together in here."
"O.k."
"First I want you to stand there, and let me push you from behind." She felt his hands on her waist, and he pushed her forward.
"All you have to do is steer," he said as they turned the corner.
"O.k. Now you will be doing two things, steering and maintaining your balance. You will be leaning forward into me. How do I explain this. Hmmm... Well, you don't want to be standing straight because if I push too hard you will fall backwards. That won't happen if you are leaning foward."
He put his hands on her waist, and she rested her hands lightly on his arms.
Then he was pushing her, and it felt strange, but she didn't fall. And then she was turning the corner, and she felt happy.
"We're going to do just fine on the next couple skate," he said.
