A Gift

Maria wanted to buy Phil a gift. Something, a token of, she wasn't sure of what to name their – relationship.
Perhaps things were complicated because she wanted him sexually, but she was hiding this fact from Phil, and to some extent herself.
She thought about buying him a ring. Something gold with a diamond or two. The discovery of diamonds in the Kamchatkan peninsula of Russia had caused the price to come down, but the sentiment was still there.
But she didn't want to be too sentimental. She didn't want to hear him tell her that there was a misunderstanding, that he had meant to only stay friends.
She frowned. (frowned = wrinkled her forehead)
Then she laughed. She remembered a song about a guy walking down the street, with all body parts swaying.
A dark brown jacket made from real Argentine leather.
She found a store in the shopping mall that sold leather jackets. Then she found it.
"That's a little big on you," Phil said.
"I want it that way," she replied.
She used her plastic (credit card) to pay for it.

"Phil, I want you to accept this, so that you will think of our friendship when you wear it."
"Maria, you shouldn't have," he said, shaking his head.
She put her hand on his shoulder. "I would prefer to have a choice, rather than you tell me no."
He looked at her with a smile that said he wasn't sure what to think.
But he put the jacket on, and they continued walking through the mall.
They passed a jewelry store. Phil reached out and took hold of her arm, to stop her.
"I want to go in there, Maria." He said. "After all, I would prefer to have a choice rather than to be told no."
She smiled at him.
He picked out a gold ring for her with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. They were small, and the ring didn't cost much more than the jacket. But it fit perfectly, and she smiled radiantly. She thought about kissing him lightly on the cheek. But her conscious mind said that was not a good idea.
