Sound of Life

They let her out of the hospital noon the next day. Robert invited her to dinner with him, and he took her to a fabulous restaurant.
He invited her to move into his house.
"I think you need a second person to help you out, and I think my grades were better last semester because of the time I spent working with you. Together, things will be better for both of us."
She felt the hard member of Jacque thrusting inside her. She flinched.
"I think that is a good idea," she said.
"You don't have to worry about me."
"O.k.," she smiled.

She was breastfeeding little Emile on the patio in the back yard when Robert walked out.
"Sorry," he said when he saw them.
"No problem," she said, and continued to nurse Emile.
"I have all the fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator that the doctor said you would need," He said.
"O.k. I want to quiz you over the French grammar that you need to know for the quiz Monday."

"Thank God for computers that talk and listen," she said to little nursing Emile as she talked to the computer to advance through the physics lesson. She could use both hands to hold Emile. Later, she could listen to her history lesson while she prepared supper. She couldn't imagine how girls had balanced school, work, and a child in ancient times when you needed a keyboard to communicate with a computer.

She placed Emile in her crib after she had finished feeding. That would give her another two hours.
She found Robert studying at the desk in the living.
She leaned on him and put her arms around him.
"I want you to come to bed with me."
"Are you sure?"
She didn't say another word, but pulled slowly, gently, but firmly on his arm.

The baby cried half an hour after Robert had fallen asleep with the "I want food" call.
"What does she need?" Robert said in a sleepy voice.
"Go back to sleep love, she just needs food."

Dominique looked tired the next day. Robert was concerned.
"I want to help you, but I can't feed her."
"Well, babies do two things. One is to nurse."

That night when she heard a certain call, she reached over and gently squeezed one of Robert's buttocks. He said some unintelligible word, and got up.
It seemed he already knew how to change a diaper in his sleep.
